How to Crochet a Yarn Skirt Videos

Video on how to Crochet Ruffles onto your Skirt. (I didn’t mention in the video, that the 3rd round of ruffles only has a chain 1, not chain 2)

Supplies:

hook

Red Heart Love Purple and White yarn, 1 1/2 skeins of Purple and less than 1/2 of white or any 4 ply yarn would work,

Ribbon, I used 1 inch thick ribbon or you can do a 1/2 ribbon too

Start: (Chain 66 for size 2, or 72 for size 4), join to first ch to form a loop. Be careful not to twist it.

I hook with Purple yarn

Rnd 1. sc in each stitch around, sl st. (66,72)

Rnd 2. ch 3, triple crochet in each stitch around, sl st in beg chain. (66,72) (this will be the ribbon belt loops)

Rnd 3 ch 1, sc in each stitch around, sl st (66,72)

Rnd 4: ch 2, dc in each back loop stitch around, sl st. (66,72)

Rnd 5. ch 2(counts as dc), dc in the next dc back loop, *work 2 dc in the next back loop, dc in the next two back loops, sl st, *Repeat around. (89,95)

Rnds 6-15. *ch 2, dc in each back loop around, *Repeat around, sl st

Take Ribbon and insert in every other triple crochet, *Repeat around, then in the center front, opposite side of the seam, skip 4 triple crochet in between the two ends of ribbon and connect the two ends of the ribbon and make a bow.

For Size 4, I would continue the length to 6 more rounds.

Ruffles: Start with Purple yarn

Rnd 1: sl st into Rnd 4 back loop in the back with the sl st, Ch 3(counts as first dc), work a dc, ch 2, 2 dc, skip next back loop, *work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc (v-stitch made), skip next back loop, *Repeat around, sl st.

Rnd 2. sl st into the chain 2 of the previous v-stitch from rnd 1, Ch 3(counts as first dc), *work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc (v-stitch in the chain 2 of the previous v-stitch from rnd 1) *Repeat around, sl st

Rnd 3: sl st into the chain 2 of the v-stitch, Ch 3(counts as first dc), work a dc, ch 1, 2 dc (v-stitch in the chain 2), *work 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc, *Repeat around, sl st (same except just a chain 1) Fasten off.

Skip Two back loop Rounds of back loops. Slip Stitch into the 3rd rounds of back loops.

Now Sl St into the 3rd round of back loops with White yarn.

Rnd 1: A new set of Ruffles; sl st into the back loop in the back with the sl st, Ch 3(counts as first dc), work a dc, ch 2, 2 dc, skip next back loop, *work 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc (v-stitch made), skip next back loop, *Repeat around, sl st.

Rnd 2: sl st into the chain 2 of the v-stitch, Ch 3(counts as first dc), work a dc, ch 2, 2 dc (v-stitch in the chain 2), *work a 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc (v-stitch in the chain 2) *Repeat around, sl st

Rnd 3: sl st into the chain 2 of the v-stitch, Ch 3(counts as first dc), work a dc, ch 1, 2 dc (v-stitch in the chain 2), *work a 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc (v-stitch in the chain 2) *Repeat around, sl st *Repeat around, sl st (same except just a chain 1) Fasten off.

Now the Last Two sets of Ruffles, Will be done the same way, The next set of Ruffles will be done with purple yarn, Skip two Rounds of back loops, sl st in the 3rd round.

Now Sl St into the 3rd round of back loops with Purple yarn.

Are you planning on making a video tutorial for this one? I am working on it but am struggling in some areas. It would be great to see it in action.

  2. Tjohnson says:

Can you clarify the ruffles. I’m not understanding where to start. I’ve used all the back loops to dc in so the front loops are open but you never use those. Do you attach the ruffles to the front side and in which stitch?

  3. Coreen says:

I am also having a hard time where & how to do the ruffles for the skirt using regular wool not like the video above. Will check out you tube again. It seems confusing .Exactly how to see the back loops & exactly where they are to go each frill.

  4. amray2007 says:

Im sorry you are confused, you slip stitch into the back loops with your yarn to start the ruffles, I might make another video on this when I get time.

  5. Coreen says:

God bless you i am now going to un pick my mess & make beautiful ruffles like you.So glad you put the video back on, was going to try & download it but couldn’t was afraid it might disappear & I would be stuck but once I do a few should be ok. Thanks a million making this for 2 granddaughters

  6. Joanne says:

When you start the 2 dc in round 5 of the ruffle skirt, at the end, do you now have 132 stitches instead of the 66 for size 2 (144 for size 4)?

  7. amray2007 says:

I did the count, its (89,95) counting the chain 2 as a dc, Its dc in the next two dc, then increase 2 dc in that round, so its not as much as you think, hope that helps.

  8. Joanne says:

I think I may understand R-5 now. I’ve been adding 2 dc in each back loop. Therefore I ended up with 132 counting the chain. If I have it correct now, you add 2 dc to every other back loop, not every back loop.

  9. amray2007 says:

no not every other, every third, its dc in the next two stitches, dc, dc, and then 2 dc increase, does that makes sense?

  10. Joanne says:

Ok, I got 89 for size 2 by doing a dc, a dc, then 2 dc. Every 3rd is 2 dc in same bk loop and then I end up with the 89. Thank you, the skirt is beautiful and our neighbors daughter love’s it.

  11. omifaye says:

Hi am in the middle of making this adorable skirt, but I’m having an issue with round 5. I’m uncertain that I am doing it correctly. It just doesn’t look the same as it did in your ruffles tutorial video. Any help iS greatly appreciated. :)

  12. Phyllis says:

Thank you so much for the skirt pattern,it’s lovely. Instructions were supper easy. Keep the ideas coming!

  13. Sha says:

My question is for row # 5, I don’t understand what to do. I chained 2 and dc in the back loop of the next dc now what?

  14. amray2007 says:

ch 2(counts as dc), dc in the next dc back loop, *work 2 dc in the next back loop, dc in the next two back loops, sl st, *Repeat around. (89,95)

  15. Anne says:

This skirt is beautiful and your instructions are easy to follow. When I started the ruffles, while watching your video showing the waist band at the top with the back seam facing me, I noticed when I they are finished the RIGHT side of the ruffle will be underneath when completed. Is this correct? Thanks, Anne

  16. Anne says:

I’d just like to add to my last question – when I magnified your photo of the skirt, your ruffles show the RIGHT side on top of the ruffle. If I worked the ruffles with the skirt in the “upside down position”, and not in the direction your video shows, then I would have the right side showing on the ruffles. Will the ruffles still lay properly if I do it this way? Thanks, Anne

  17. Anne says:

In response to tjohnson, I was a little confused as well at first until I looked at the video again. I’m thinking maybe the “back loops” are technically the front loops left over from the rows of DC where we inserted the hook into each back loop. The video is very helpful and clears up all the problems.

  18. Sha says:

I was trying to share the skirt I completed with your tutorial but I don’t know how to post it, any suggestions.

  19. Jesi says:

Any suggestion for how many to chain for a newborn size? I’d like to have this done before she’s born for her newborn pictures, so I can’t measure to check…

  20. Enid ROBBINS says:

I loved this skirt and it came out beautifully! Your video was very helpful, thank you for this beautiful pattern. My granddaughter loves it!

  21. Christine Gaouette says:

Amray, have been trying so hard to make this ruffled skirt, and just cannot for some reason get row 5. I have 66 stitches at the end of row 4, then I ss chain 2 work a double crochet in back loop of next stitch, then 2 double in next back loop, then a double in each of the next 2 back loops, and then a slip stitch in the next back loop, then reapeat the 2, 1,1, slip stitch around. And at the end I have 82 stitches instead of 89.
I am sure that you are a busy Mom with 2 little girls. I have 4 little granddaughters and would love to make this for them. I would appreciate any help you may be able to give me. If not I understand. I had 3 little one myself along time ago. Thank You in advance either way.

  22. amray2007 says:

hi, did you watch the video? Why are you slip stitching into stitches? It should be this for the next roound, ch 2(counts as dc), dc in the next dc back loop, *work 2 dc in the next back loop, dc in the next two back loops, sl st, *Repeat around. (89,95)

  23. amray2007 says:

hi, thanks, did you watch the video? why are ss into stitches, it should be like this for the next round, ch 2(counts as dc), dc in the next dc back loop, *work 2 dc in the next back loop, dc in the next two back loops, sl st at the end, *Repeat around. (89,95)

  24. Jennifer says:
