Crochet Poncho Tutorial

I made this for my 3 year old. I did this in multiples of 8. So I chained 72 with a H hook. Now if you want to Make this for a different size, then make sure its in a multiple 8 and it can fit over the child’s head, you can always change the hook size as well.

Rnd 1:  Start with Pink yarn, Chain 72, sl st to join to make a ring. Sc in each chain around. sl st. -72 sc

Rnd 2: Sl st with White yarn, Chain 3 (Counts as a dc), dc in the next two sc, *skip sc, Chain 1, dc in the next 3 sc, *Repeat around, sl st 18(3 dc’s)

Rnd 3: Sl st into the chain 1 space, then sl st with Pink yarn, Chain 3 (Counts as a dc), work 2 dc in the same chain 1 space, *Chain 1,  work 3 dc in the next chain 1 space, *Repeat for a total of 9(3 dc’s),Chain 1, work 3 dc in the next chain 1 space, chain 1, work 3 dc, (creates an increase, so you have a 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc in next chain 1 space after 9( 3 dc’s ), **Chain 1, work 3 dc the next chain 1 space, **Repeat for a total of 8 times, chain 1, work 3 dc in the beginning chain 1 space, Chain 1, sl st in the beginning Chain 3 (this will create a 3 dc, chain 1, 3 dc increase in the beginning 3 dc) sl st.

Rnd 4:  Sl st into the chain 1 space, then sl st with White yarn, Chain 3 (Counts as a dc), work 2 dc in the same chain 1 space, *Repeat for a Total of 9(3 dc’s), Chain 1, work 3 dc, chain 1, 3 dc in the next chain 1 space (creates an increase), **Chain 1, work 3 dc in the next chain 1 space, **Repeat for a Total of 8(3 dc’s), chain 1, work 3 dc, chain 1, in the beginning chain 1 space (creates an increase), sl st

Rnds 5-20:  Sl st into the next chain 1 space, then sl st with Pink yarn, *Repeat Round 3, but alternate with white and pink yarn each round. I did 20 Rounds of Pink and White back and forth, continue until your desired length. Weave in the Ends.

Love the pink and white poncho. My grand daughter is 8.Would love to make her one. I know I need to start off with more chain stitches but how do I know where to do the increase. Thank you

you could probably go plus 8 chains, so 72 plus 8 = 80, but If you could I would place it around her neck to see if that would be big enough or too big. Also, I would probably work your (3 dc, ch 1’s) 10 times before the increase and then 9(3 dc, ch 1’s) before the next increase in the same round, if you look at the original pattern it calls for 9(3 dc, ch 1’s) and then an increase and then 8(3 dc’s and ch 1’s) and then an increase in the same round. hope that helps.

On row 3, before you join in the chain 3, there is a 2 dbl crochet and then a 3 dbl crochet to join. Am I missing a step! It doesn’t add up. Thanks

  4. amray2007 says:

that Chain 3 (Counts as a dc), thats why its chain 3 plus 2 double crochet to equal 3 double crochet because that chain 3 counts as a double crochet.

I really liked the pattern. Could you please show 4th row. I have 96 stiches and first round after 12 dc i increased and after 11 dcs. However 1st half is remain with 12 but second half is increased in every roe

  6. amray2007 says:

you should only have two increases in that round, Sl st into the chain 1 space, then sl st with White yarn, Chain 3 (Counts as a dc), work 2 dc in the same chain 1 space, *Repeat for a Total of 9(3 dc’s), Chain 1, work 3 dc, chain 1, 3 dc in the next chain 1 space (creates an increase), **Chain 1, work 3 dc in the next chain 1 space, **Repeat for a Total of 8(3 dc’s), chain 1, work 3 dc, chain 1, in the beginning chain 1 space (creates an increase), sl st

  7. amray2007 says:

ou can do a chain that is a multiple of 8 that fits around that child’s neck. Then follow the pattern.

  8. Holly says:

I’m confused 3rd row 9(3dc) then 3,ch1,3 in 10th single crochet space then 8 3’s and do increase in 9th after that i get confused and i do 9 then increase and then 9 and then increase I’m not understanding why this is happening

  9. amray2007 says:

did you watch the video, that may help too. Basically you will have 9 of 3 dc then you will have an increase, which is 3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc, then work 8 of the 3 dc, then do the increase again, then finish up that round. Only two increases in the round, the rest is 3 dc’s.

  10. Susan says:

I am also confused about around 3. There are 18 chain 1 spaces. I crochet 8 3 DCs and increased in 9th chain 1 space 2x). I have made 2 of these ponchos and really like them.

  11. Ruth says:

Does anyone know how long to make it for an 8 year old. I want to make it for my dgd and she doesn’t live near me

  12. Debbie says:

Can’t wait to try this pattern. It seems that poncho patterns for children are hard to find.
    Thanks Deb
