Crochet Hat sizes with this Double crochet pattern
Newborn baby head circumference, 13″ – 14″, Hat height = 5.5 to 6″= D hookIf you want to have a bulky hat, use this pattern here with a J hookhttp://crochetjewel.com/?p=14362
Baby 3 to 6 months, Head Cir, 14″ – 17 “, Hat height= 6.5 – 7″=E hook
baby 6-12 months, 16″-19″ head cir., hat length=6.5-7″=F hook,
toddler-preschooler (12 months-3 yrs), 18″-20″ head cir., hat length=7″ =G hook
child 4-10 yrs, head cir., 19″-20 1/2 “”, hat length= 7.5″=H hook
teens, head cir., 20 1/2″-22″, hat length, 7.5-8″=I hook
Adult women, 21.5″-22.5″, hat length, 8″= J

Supplies:

H hook, G hook
White, red, black, orange, and green Red Heart yarn
Abbreviations: dc=double crochet, sc=single crochet, sl st=slip stitch, ch=chain, hdc=half double crochet, 2sctog= 2 single crochet together decrease. hdc2tog=half double 2 together
I made this for my 4 year old, measures 19-20 inches, 7 inches long.
Instructions: H hook, green, red, and white yarn

How to Crochet a Double Crochet Hat Video:

rnd 1: green yarnWork 11 dc in a Magic Circle, sl st on top of the chain 3. -11 dc

With Green yarn, the first 5 rounds crochet with green yarn
rnd 2. ch 3, dc in same st. as joining, 2dc in each st. around. join with sl st on top of chain 2. -22 sts.
rnd 3. ch 3 counts as the first stitch, *2dc in next st., dc in the next stitch, repeat from *around, join with sl st. -33 sts.
rnd 4. ch 3, dc in the next st., 2dc in the next st., *dc in the next two stitches, 2dc in the next stitch, repeat from *around, join with sl st. -44 sts.
rnd 5. ch 3, dc in the next two sts., 2dc in the next st., *dc in the next three stitches, 2dc in the next stitch, repeat from *around, join with sl st. -55 sts.
rnd 6. *ch 3, dc in each st around, join sl st., *repeat.
rnd 7. Switch to Red yarn, *ch 3, dc in each st around, join sl st., *repeat.

switch to White yarn for rounds 7-until desired length
rnd 8– until desired length, *ch 3, dc in each st around, join sl st., *repeat.
continue until the hat reaches 7 inches, sl st. fasten off. (if this is a smaller size the length will be shorter, look above for sizes and what hook to use.)

Ear flaps: If you would like to add ear flaps

Make 2
H hook, white yarn
1st ear flap, you can slip stitch onto the side of the hat with your white yarn, begin the dc stitches, (like to have the seam in the back of the hat, so I do the ear flap on the side of the hat)
2nd flap, fold hat in half and sl st in dc directly across from the last dc from the other ear flap. follow directions below for both ear flaps.
Row 1. ch 2, dc in the next 11 dc stitches, turn. -11 sts
Row 2. ch 2, dc2tog. dc in the next 6 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. -9
Row 3. ch 2, dc2tog, dc in the next 4 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st., turn. -7
Row 4. ch 2, dc2tog, dc in the next 2 stitches. dc2tog. dc in the last st. turn. -5
Row 5. ch 2, dc2tog twice, dc in last st. cut yarn and pull through -3
The braid from the center of the ear flap at the bottom, use white yarn, with a sl st in the center of the bottom of the ear flap and chain 30, and sl st it off and cut yarn.
Nose: Orange yarn, G hook,
ch 6
rnd 1: sc in the 2nd chain from the hook (5 sc)
rnd 2: sc in each stitch across (5sc)
rnd 3: 2sctog, 1sc, 2sctog (3sc)
rnds 4-5: sc in each stitch across (3sc) Twice
rnd 6: 2sctog, 1sc (2sc)
rnd 7: 2sctog (1sc)place the nose below the eyes.Eyes: Make 2 eyes black yarn G hook rnd 1. ch 2, do 8 sc in the 2nd chain from the hook,
join sl st. Attach in the center of the hat, about 2 inches apart.
Mouth: Black yarn and yarn needle sew a straight line below the eyes, and secure it in the center with a
small stitch. make the sides go upward place the mouth below the nose.

    A variation for the nose that I tried and was super cute was:

    4 sc in a magic circle (don’t slip stitch to close, place a marker in the last stitch)
    2 sc in each of the 4 sc of previous round (8 sc)
    1 sc in each of the 8 sc of previous round (8sc)
    Repeat until as long as you want. I repeated for a total of about 7 rounds.
    Finish off, leaving about a 6-8 in. tail.
    Stuff with just a small pinch of polyfill and attach appropriately to snowman’s face.
